What is the use of knowledge when it is not used in an application? Useless.
The knowledge which is not used in a real-time application is like a museum that is not visited by anyone. There can be tremendous and immense amount of things in the museum but when no one visits it just turns out into a useless place. Likewise a person can have great knowledge on various things but if is unable to stand for what he learnt and unable to make a living out of what he has leant by using it to solve a real life problem, it is of no use. This is a small inspiring story about one such person who converted his knowledge into invention.
Rishab Jain, a 16 year old from Stoller Middle School in Portland invented an algorithm that uses machine learning help doctors zero in on the pancreas during cancer treatment. The treatment for cancer as we all know is such a hideous process, and even now the permanent and complete cure for cancer is not yet found. The process involves killing of all the damaged cells and sparing as many healthy cells as possible.
This gets even more crucial while treating the patients suffering with pancreas cancer, since the pancreas moves around and sometimes it gets obnubilated behind other organism. So to solve this problem this brave mind invented an algorithm which can sense the place where the pancreas is located when he was just 13 year old, and this algorithm won Jain the $25,000 top prize at the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge in October.
“I’ve gotten to see how doctors can make an immediate difference in people’s lives, so I want to continue pursuing that.” says this young mind. Incredible thoughts from incredible teenager!
